Personal Home Care Services

What is a Personal Assistant? (PA)

In a Health & Social Care setting, a PA is someone employed to help people with a whole host of day-to-day activities.

These activities can include;

Personal Care (showering, dressing, etc.)

Admin tasks

Cooking and preparing food

Shopping

Supporting the individual with social and physical activities

Supporting the individual to get to work, school, university

Support with household activities

The activities the PA is required to support will depend heavily on the individual employer.

How is this different from a domiciliary care role?

There are many differences between a PA and a Home / Domiciliary Care Worker; the main one being that Personal Assistants are employed by the individual directly (The Individual Employer), as opposed to domiciliary care workers who are employed by a service/ agency and provide care to individuals based on a needs analysis from either the service or the local authority.

Another key distinction is the level of control the individual has on the level of care support they receive. For an Individual Employer (IE) with a PA they can decide the “who, what, how and when” for their care. Domiciliary Care however differs in this regard as the service/ agency and/ or local authority decide the level of care required, and how and when it will be delivered.

How are Personal Assistants funded?

There are several routes to funding for Individual Employers (IEs) to be able to employ one or more Personal Assistants.

The main routes to funding in England are through:

Local Authority Social care direct payments

NHS Personal Health Budget (PHB)

Self-funding
